Chiropractic Care for Neck pain and Whiplash

Restricted, painful necks — from desk posture to collision injuries.

Two Different Problems

Most neck pain we see falls into one of two categories, and they need different handling.

Gradual-onset neck pain builds over weeks or months. It is usually load-related — sustained postures, screen work, driving, carrying, sleeping position. The tissue is not damaged; it is overloaded and guarding. This responds well to manual treatment combined with changing what is loading it.

Whiplash-associated disorder follows a collision or sudden acceleration of the head. The neck has been through a genuine injury event, and the first weeks are managed more cautiously: gentle movement, reassurance, gradual loading, and no aggressive manipulation into an irritable neck.

Red flags

Screening for the small number of presentations that need medical assessment rather than manual therapy.

Collision history

For whiplash, the mechanism, the timeline and whether symptoms are improving or spreading.

Whiplash and Your Insurance

If your neck pain follows a motor vehicle collision, treatment is funded through your own auto insurer under Section B accident benefits, regardless of fault. You do not pay, and you do not need a lawyer to start treatment.

Alberta’s current protocols provide a defined block of treatment for whiplash-associated disorder, and the system changes on 1 January 2027 when treatment funding becomes unlimited. See Section B coverage and Alberta Care-First for the detail.

Starting early matters for whiplash more than for most things. Early, gentle, active management gives better outcomes than waiting to see whether it settles.

Common Questions

Neck manipulation carries a small risk profile that is taken seriously and screened for. Where there is any concern, gentler mobilisation, soft tissue work and exercise achieve much of the same benefit. You are entitled to ask for those instead, and we will explain what we are doing and why before we do it. See is chiropractic safe.
Yes. Whiplash symptoms commonly peak 24 to 72 hours after the collision rather than immediately. It is one reason early assessment is worthwhile even if you feel manageable on the day.
For gradual-onset neck pain, usually not — a short course plus changing the load. Whiplash varies more, and a proportion of people need longer. You should always know what the plan is.

I have been seeing Hiya for my physio since a fall and a car accident. She is lovely and goes above and beyond for her clients, you can truly see she is passionate about her work. The front desk girls are all wonderful too! Always so nice, and remember you by name, greetings everyone as they come in the door. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about my experience.
