Massage for TMJ and Jaw Pain in Camrose

Jaw pain, clicking and clenching — treated through the muscles that move the jaw.

The Muscles Behind Jaw Pain

The temporomandibular joint is moved by a small group of powerful muscles: masseter, temporalis and the pterygoids. They work constantly — chewing, talking, swallowing — and for many people they also work all night, clenching or grinding.

Sustained overuse in those muscles produces a recognisable pattern: aching along the jawline, tightness at the temple, pain in front of the ear, headaches, and referred pain into the teeth that sends people to the dentist first.

Massage therapy for TMJ Camrose works on those muscles directly, including intra-oral technique where appropriate and where you consent to it, alongside the neck and upper back muscles that almost always share the load.

Massage, Physiotherapy or Your Dentist?

TMJ problems sit across several professions and it is worth knowing who does what.

  • Massage therapy treats the muscular component — the tightness, trigger points and referred pain.
  • Physiotherapy addresses joint mechanics, movement control and the exercise side, and is the right lead where there is clicking, locking or restricted opening.
  • Your dentist handles the dental side — bite, occlusion, and a night guard if grinding is damaging your teeth.

Many people need more than one of these. If your jaw locks, catches or will not open fully, start with physiotherapy or your dentist rather than massage.

Treatment of the jaw muscles from inside the mouth, with a gloved hand. It reaches muscles that cannot be treated effectively from outside. It is always explained first and always optional — plenty of useful work can be done externally if you would rather not.
The jaw muscles are often very tender when overused. Pressure should stay at a level you can breathe through, and your therapist will check throughout.
Not directly — grinding is not a muscular decision. It can reduce the muscular consequences considerably. A night guard from your dentist addresses the tooth damage.
Muscular jaw pain often eases noticeably within two or three sessions. Keeping it away usually means addressing stress, clenching habits and neck posture.

I have been seeing Hiya for my physio since a fall and a car accident. She is lovely and goes above and beyond for her clients, you can truly see she is passionate about her work. The front desk girls are all wonderful too! Always so nice, and remember you by name, greetings everyone as they come in the door. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about my experience.
